"Neat - the Chinese 3E is back! Let's try it out!"While I previously found the Chinese 3E "Megatone" mouthpiece to be a bit too large ca. 2012, we figured we would try it out again since they hadn't appeared online for years. The designs sometimes change and so does the quality.
Turns out, they aren't anything like a 3E. The cup is medium-depth, around a 3C. This example plays nicely, but without the bright sound and high register support of the 3E. How these came to be marked "3E" is a complete mystery to us, since they don't appear to be anything like a Vincent Bach 3E, nor would it be anything like a hypothetical Schilke 3E [tiny diameter, deep cup]. The engraving is similar to that of other Chinese plants, though each manufacturer has a slightly different result.
As far as mismarked pieces, we've seen a Yamaha 11C4 short shank cornet mouthpiece copy marked "11E4", Denis Wick 4B copies marked "DW4", etc., so it's not without precedent.
It's around a Bach 3C and basically plays like one. For marching band, pep band, section work, or anything where a middle-of-the-road sound and feel are desired [and you don't need to play in the stratosphere], it works well. There's barely any sign of use, the plating is fantastic, and the only big quirk are the tool marks in the cup.
It's ready to play!
