Among the coins that circulated in France during the time when Joan of Arc lived was the popular silver obol. This wonderfully well preserved example is typical of obol designs issued by feudal lords of the period.
In a remote corner of northeastern France, during a war that spanned a hundred years, a poor peasant girl compelled by the voices of angels in her head seeks out the uncrowned French king, and subsequently leads his army to a series of stunning military victories, only to be captured by the hated English and burned at the stake as a heretic. More than six centuries after her death, the legend of Joan of Arc remains a fixture in the popular culture, and is as inspiring today as it was in the fifteenth century.
Joan of Arc, the Maid of Orléans, was born circa 1412 in Champagne, an area loyal to the Armagnacs, as King Charles VII’s supporters were called. At age 13, she began to hear voices in her head that she attributed to saints Michael, Margaret, and Catherine, among others. Her angelic “counsel” sent her on a famous quest. Against seemingly impossible odds, she wangled an audience with the king, ultimately leading the French army to a series of improbable victories during the Hundred Years' War, including the famous triumph at Orléans which paved the way for Charles’s coronation at Rheims. She was subsequently captured by the rival Burgundians, transferred to the English in exchange for money, put on trial by the pro-English Bishop of Beauvais, and burned at the stake as a heretic. She was just 19 years old when she perished.
Twenty-five years after the execution, an Inquisitorial court authorized by Pope Callixtus III examined the trial, pronounced her innocent, and declared her a martyr. Joan of Arc was beatified in 1909 and canonized in 1920. She is one of the nine patron saints of France, and remains a significant figure in Western culture. From Napoleon onward, French politicians of all leanings have invoked her memory. Many famous writers, composers, artists, and filmmakers have created works about her.

Although the term “obol” has been used to describe many coins throughout history, beginning with the ancient Greeks, this coin in its present form had its origins as a silver coin worth 4 deniers, first issued in early 13th century France. It features a prominent equal-armed cross and inscriptions of the ruler’s name, with the family motto and/or monogram written in the crude, medieval script of the period.
