3 Piece Modular Cup + Shank + Rim Concept:
Components
Maelstrom Mouthpieces provides a method which leaves the “blow” up to the performer by enabling them to model their ideal mouthpiece through means of mixing and matching: 1) a
rim
that is  congruent with the persons’ embouchure; 2) a
cup
that suits a style of playing; and, 3) a
shank/backbore
that allows for the most efficient blow within that style.  To this end we offer five different rim choices (with new models in development), to cover the needs of different players.  Our other modular components cover a wide range of sound forming possibilities by way of five different cup sizes (S, MS, M, ML, and L), any of which might be combined with given shank sizes running from a 1 drill to a 22 drill, with or without
vortex
(a drilled area at the top of the shank that equates in some ways to a double cup).
Freedom and Flexibility
We feel that horn players who have clear ideas of what they want will appreciate our cup choices and the fact that incrementally stepped shanks allow for subtle changes in sound forming while also avoiding issues tied to drilling out backbores (and removing metal) that can't be undone on conventional mouthpieces.  Another positive is that all of our shanks are constructed from stainless steel and should hold up very well as used items! .
